Housekeeping is an essential part of everyone’s responsibility in FREAS. After completing a task/job, clean up the work area and place all waste material in the proper disposal container. If you determine that a special cleaning process may be needed, contact the Custodial Supervisor prior to starting the work for their input. Create a child work order in Maximo for Custodial support. Materials and supplies should only be placed in their approved storage location.

- According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 800 injuries annually involving poor housekeeping of floors, walkways, work areas and ground surfaces.
- OSHA lists housekeeping on their top 100 most frequently cited list.
- Separate waste or scrap materials from the immediate work area to avoid creating trip and slip hazards.
- Store pipe, conduit, rebar, and other rolling materials away from aisles and walk ways to avoid creating trip hazards.
- Use designated waste bins, recycle bins, and metal scrap containers when available.
- Entry ways, walk-ways, and sidewalks should be kept free of materials that are a potential trip, slip, or fall hazard.
- Workers should do their part to help avoid and prevent injuries and incidents by practicing good housekeeping on every job.
- All work areas such as warehouse floors, production areas, break-rooms, and restrooms should be maintained and keep clean.
- Materials should only be kept in a designated storage area.
- Never block an emergency exists with tools or stored materials.
- Return tools and unused materials to their proper location.
- OSHA Standard 1910.22(a)(1) All places of employment, passageways, storerooms, service rooms, and walking/working surfaces are kept in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition.
- EHS conducts annual housekeeping inspections and assigns any findings to the space owner.
- Report all spills and leaks so that the proper cleaning process can be used.
- Good housekeeping practices should eliminate all fire hazards.
- Keep combustible materials at the jobsite to a minimum. Contact EHS if you have questions.
- Avoid tracking dirt/materials into the non-jobsite areas of the building/campus.
- Housekeeping is not a one-time process. Maintain regular inspections of your areas.
