Housekeeping

Housekeeping is an essential part of everyone’s responsibility in FREAS. After completing a task/job, clean up the work area and place all waste material in the proper disposal container. If you determine that a special cleaning process may be needed, contact the Custodial Supervisor prior to starting the work for their input. Materials and supplies should only be placed in their approved storage location.
Please see the FREAS SharePoint page under Safety for more information on this topic.

Hearing Protection

With the summer comes an increase in the overall noise levels on campus. Between the lawn mowers, excavators, power washers and truck traffic, the decibel levels jump up dramatically this time of year. Whether you are working outdoors in this environment, or inside a building mechanical room, please wear the proper hearing protection identified in the related Job Hazards Analysis or evaluated by EHS under the UD Hearing Conservation Program. Please see the FREAS SharePoint page under Safety for more information on this topic.

Lyme Disease Awareness

May is Lyme Disease Awareness month. Now that the weather is changing, and the temperatures are finally warming up, we will be spending more time outdoors. For our folks in the Grounds unit, it’s business as usual when it comes to protecting themselves against Mother Nature. However, us lay people need to be more aware of tick-borne diseases and how to protect ourselves. Each year, over 30,000 new cases of Lyme disease are reported to the Center of Disease Control. The CDC believes the actual number may be 10 times what is reported. Learn how to protect yourself and your family. Please see the FREAS SharePoint page under Safety for more information on this topic.

Distracted Driving Awareness

April is Distracted Driving Awareness month which is a nationwide effort to help drivers recognize the dangers of distracted driving and eliminate the preventable deaths that it can cause. Cell phones, dashboard touchscreens, voice commands and other in-vehicle technologies pose a threat to our safety. If you receive an urgent cell phone call/text, or a two-way radio call while driving, pull off the road to a safe area and park your vehicle before you respond. The consequences of these many distractions are not worth the convenience they offer.
Please see the FREAS SharePoint page under Safety for more information on this topic.

Lifting Safety

In a large facilities department such as ours, lifting is very much a part of our everyday jobs. But because it is something many of us do so often, we tend to do it in auto-mode, without thinking first about proper technique. Lifting incorrectly can result
in a variety of injuries, with back strain being the most common. Using proper lifting techniques can save you from pain today, as well as years down the road.
Please see the FREAS SharePoint page under Safety for more information on this topic.
