Keys and Access Cards
University Key/Access Card Control Policy and Procedures
Upon check-in, residents receive an access card for their building and other
designated areas, and a key to their room/mailbox. Duplication of any University
keys, including room keys, is prohibited by the Code of Conduct.
• It is recommended that residents not carry their University ID together with
their access card and room key in the event of loss.
• Lost Cards: Residents who lose or misplace their access card must
obtain a new card from the Residence Life staff. Their original card will be
deactivated immediately. The new card will become the resident's permanent card
and the charge will be $16.00. Lost or misplaced cards that are located and returned
within five calendar days to the Housing Operations Center, 30 New London Avenue,
in Lot 19 behind the Art Building will not be billed.
• Damaged Cards: Residents who damage or deface their access card will be
billed $16.00 for a new access card.
• Lost Keys: Residents who lose or misplace their key may sign out a spare key from
the Residence Life staff, which must be returned within 48 hours. The charge for
a core change during regular business hours is $70.00. For personal safety, when
keys and identification are lost together, an emergency core change must be
initiated. Please contact your Residence Life staff or University Police.
The charge for an emergency core change done after 4:30 pm Monday - Friday and
on Weekends is $95.00.
• Graduate Student and Family Housing Residents must obtain a new card or key from
the Apartment Manager. Residents should read the Graduate Student and Family
Housing Manual for specific instructions regarding key core changes and check-out
procedures.
• Check-Out: Residents must return access cards and room keys to the
Residence Life staff at the end of fall, winter and spring semesters and if you leave
the residence halls during the semester. For security reasons, if cards or keys are
not returned within the required time frame, access cards are considered lost and
are deactivated, locks on doors are changed, and residents are billed accordingly.
